The Mission
The PLO Mission to the United States received its current status in 1994 as a result of the Oslo Accords signed by Israel and the PLO in September 1993. At the time of its establishment in 1978, the Mission was known as the Palestine Information Office. In 1988 it became the Palestine Affairs Center and maintained that status until 1994 when it became known as the PLO Mission.
The following PLO representatives have led the Mission since 1978:
Hatem Hussieni: 1978-1982 (deceased, 1994)
Hassan Abdel Rahman: 1982-1991
Anees Barghouti: 1991-1993
Hassan Abdel Rahman: 1993-2005
Afif Safieh: 2005-2008*
Maen Rashid Areikat: May 2009-present
*Between April 2008 and April 2009, Dr. Nabil Abu Zneid served as the Misson’s Charge D’Affairs.
